It's In Our NatureWe both came from a long history of farmers. Matt's grandparents grew up farming and Chandler's grandparents were dairy farmers. Actually this is how we met, while Matt was working on Chandler's grandparents dairy farm.
Matt started out by raising beef cows and pigs for 4H and Chandler by showing dairy cows at county and state fairs. We have been dairy farmers ourselves and as 1st generation dairy farmers during very high corn costs and gas prices it was very tough. Matt decided to get a job off the farm to keep things running. Since his degree and passion is in Agriculture, he did not sway far and began servicing chickens for a poultry integrator. After realizing that raising chickens seemed a lot more profitable then dairy, we started renting chicken houses and raising chickens, although it was hard to say good bye to our cows. We then decided this is how we wanted to make a steady income farming so we searched to buy our own poultry farm. We ended up finding a 98 acre farm in Virginia and moved our family to make our dreams of raising a family on the benefits of farm-hood a dream come true. Here we are! We raise chickens for Tyson as our main gig. However, making hay and raising pigs and sheep is the part that we absolutely love about this lifestyle. My children are learning how to raise their own food and learning the virtues of hard work.... makes it all worth it! |
